The Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the port by protecting people, property, premises, and cargo. This includes controlling access at entry points, preventing unauthorized entry, and maintaining compliance with international maritime security regulations, such as the ISPS Code. The officer conducts patrols, inspections, and monitors for potential security threats, reporting any suspicious activities. They work closely with law enforcement and port management to ensure coordinated security efforts and emergency response plans, contributing to a secure environment for all port activities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- A minimum of a high school Diploma, vocational logistics training and/or warehouse or safety procedures experience.
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in Security or surveillance.
- Have excellent writing skills, be computer literate (i.e. proficient use of Microsoft Word).
- Knowledge of basic safety standards and procedures in a port environment is desirable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Understanding of security operations, surveillance techniques, and emergency response procedures.
- Knowledge of international maritime security standards, including the ISPS Code, and compliance requirements for port facilities.
- Awareness of potential security threats and risks, with the ability to identify and mitigate them.
- Basic knowledge of first aid, CPR, and emergency evacuation procedures.
- Monitor security cameras, conduct patrols, and stay alert to potential threats or suspicious activities.
- Ability to assess situations quickly and make effective decisions to ensure security and safety.
- Ability to spot discrepancies, potential breaches, and security vulnerabilities in real-time.
- Ability to de-escalate tense situations and manage conflicts in a calm and professional manner.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting incidents and interacting with internal and external parties, including law enforcement and port management.
- Ability to remain alert, perform foot patrols, and handle physical demands of the job.
- Familiarity with security systems, surveillance equipment, and access control systems.
- Ability to interact with visitors, employees, and contractors in a professional, helpful, and courteous manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Essential duties include but are not limited to:
- To protect the property of the Freeport Harbour Company by securing access to all entry points of the property with particular attention to wharf side, operational areas, berths, terminals, buildings and perimeters.
- Security compliance with ISPS requirements.
- Responsible for identity and vehicle checks for persons entering the Harbour.
- To patrol all areas of Freeport Harbour this shall include the outside perimeters.
- To monitor and control the flow of vehicular traffic entering and leaving the facility.
- Handling routine and emergency phone calls, operating base radio station, directing and controlling vehicular traffic, vessel, and pedestrian traffic.
- Maintain Diary, prepare Patrol Forms, Log Books, and Incident Reports daily as required.
- Ensure that all Parking Regulations are enforced as per Harbour Rules and Regulations and the ISPS Code.
- Check cargo entering and leaving the facility and ensure that seals are intact and that the cargo documentation matches the cargo and container leaving the property.
- Ensure that all buildings are secure.
- Security Officers are to respond to security situations in a professional and timely manner and under the direction of the Security Supervisor.
- Security Personnel are to be on time, at the appropriate duty station, and in uniform.
- Constantly maintaining a positive and professional attitude on the job.
- Consistently punctual and prepared to perform all duties as assigned.
- Must meet the department’s productivity standards.
HEALTH & SAFETY
- Be fully responsible for the health and safety of subordinates/self.
- To provide and maintain safe systems of work within and by team.
- Ensure compliance with all company safety policies and procedures.
- Check for potential hazards and unsafe acts and to take corrective action.
- Ensure that protective clothing issued by the Company is worn as required.
- Ensure that no person is allowed to work in situations which may be hazardous. In relatively non-hazardous areas certain employees may be permitted to work alone, if necessary, but arrangements must be made to ensure their well-being.
- Ensure the prompt evaluation and expedite the appropriate action on safety complaints and employee comments on health and safety at work.
