The Facilities Department of Freeport Harbor Company is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Diesel Mechanic. The Diesel Mechanic will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines and related systems within the organization’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. Key duties include conducting routine inspections, performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical issues, and repairing or replacing faulty parts. The Diesel Mechanic will ensure that all work is completed to the highest safety, quality, and regulatory standards. The role also involves assisting with general equipment maintenance to ensure the fleet remains in safe, efficient, and operational condition for daily use.
Education and Experience:
- A minimum of a high school diploma, vocational mechanical training and/or direct engine repair experience.
- Certification in Mechanics/Engine Repairs or Technology from a Technical or Trade School.
- ASE Certifications
- Have a minimum of 5 years’ actual or equivalent experience in the position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Must be able to work from blueprints or technical documents.
- Must be able to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical defects.
- Must be able to carry out repairs with and without supervision.
- Knowledge of Computer applications, engine repair, and applied automotive techniques.
- Must be able to work with oils, lubricants, fuels and other petroleum products.
- Understands the use of all safety equipment, practices and PPE as required.
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Required to stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl as part of the work function.
- Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold and extreme heat.
Essential Functions include but are not limited to:
- Repairs and maintains all equipment and machinery under the maintenance responsibility of the Fleet Maintenance Department.
- Carry out minor overhauls, repairs and adjustments to engines, transmissions, differentials, and other related mechanical systems on equipment.
- Determine the extent of necessary repairs; replace and repair faulty or damaged parts; determine repairs beyond the shop’s capabilities.
- Operate hand tools, and other required machinery and equipment in a safe and responsible manner consistent with internationally acceptable standards.
- Maintains work and material records in either electronic or written format as directed.
- Maintains a clean and tidy work environment.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
